Project One: Post #2

Here are the explorations with the provided typography.

I mainly focused on the overall layout, but now I wish that I had been more curious with individual aspects of the design.

David Carson

This is the first time that I have been introduced to David Carson and his work. While viewing his TED talk, several things addressed struck me as important.

David Carson is a big believer in the emotion of design, what is the emotional response evoked? How does the viewer react to this response. Carson provides a two photographs to explain this idea or theory. He compares two “no parking” signs but he specifically focuses on the typographic style of these phrases. One style seems subtle, minimalist, and industrial; while the other sign comes off as aggressive and territorial. As Carson points out, anyone’s natural instinct would be to park by the first sign because one imagines a civilized human being v the aggressive serial killer. It is amazing how one’s writing can convey personas to total strangers. So that goes to say that it is important to personalize your work to make it memorable, but also to gain the viewer’s attention.

Another point Carson made was his take on intuition. Specifically, how it is involved in the world of Graphic Design. Carson believes that intuition is the biggest element in design–allows follow your gut. So intuition can occur in many different forms, but most likely it will come on its own accord. One cannot force this inspiration or moment of intuition. So in some situations, it is best to take a step back from technology and either relax or perhaps begin creating with your hands. Look for unique perspectives, something that could make it intriguing to the viewer and allow that to influence you.

Project One: Post #1

To begin this project, I chose the following attribute words that each of my cereal boxes will convey.

Comfort
Energy
Order

After choosing these essential words, I began by reviewing the definitions and synonyms of said words. This was an important step because it allowed for brainstorming and configuring the proper design connotation for the typographic redesigns.

Comfort
Definition: to soothe, console, or reassure; bring cheer to.
Synonyms: ease, relaxation, repose, tranquility, contentment, coziness, luxury, etc.

Energy
Definition: forcefulness of expression: an adequate or abundant amount of such power.
Synonyms: vitality, vigor, life, liveliness, animation, vivacity, spirit, etc.

Order
Definition: proper, satisfactory, methodical or harmonious arrangement.
Synonyms: sequence, arrangement, organization, disposition, system, series, etc.

From there, I began to divide the information provided into certain categories: front/back panel, side/top/bottom panels, etc. I divided the information based on the overall tone of certain phrases but also focusing on their typographic appeal and potential. With all these categories in mind, I began to briefly sketch possible formatting.

These sketches are in the beginning stage and by no means the final designs. I look forward to explore more possibilities this weekend, especially now that I have a rough template for indesign!
