Adrian Frutiger is a prominent
typeface designer of the twentieth-century, best known for his typefaces:
Univers and Fruitiger. He began his typography career as a printing apprentice, later
continuing his training with typography through the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts.
After completing his education, Frutiger moved to Paris in 1952 and began working as the Artistic Manager at Deberny & Peignot. It was here that Adrian
Frutiger began to design his own typefaces, which would gain him recognition.
Frutiger's most famous font is Univers. This font was created for the metal and film industry, but it became so popular that it now has no limit. It is a sans serif font which displays a higher x-height and even stroke weight
to improve legibility. Univers was the first typeface to utilize the numbering
system (ex. 46 Univers, 45 Univers) as opposed to using names with the traditional descriptions of bold, italics, etc. making this font a breakthrough. This system was created through the employment of the Univers Grid. A chart that documents the different variations
of the font based on stroke weight and kerning. This system has helped organize fonts in a way not before conceived. Not only was the system useful,
but the font itself grew quite popular. With 27 different variations, it is one
of the most adaptable fonts available.
